We collected around 1500 shoes!
The Friday the drive ended we counted up all the shoes from the schools and from the football game. Over fall break, someone from Changing Footprints came to pick up the shoes. After being stored in Sydney's garage for so long, we finally got rid of the all the bags. We jammed all the shoes into 2 cars and drove them to Beech Grove to drop them off. After fall break, we had to go back and pick up some straggler shoes that people brought in or went uncounted. We then added these shoes to the drive. We dropped them by a worker of the nonprofit that lives in New Palestine. We had returned the unused shirts that the athletic office gave us. Then, we contacted the winning teachers, Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Manning. We had told them they had won and asked for their lunch time and how many students they had. We also started contacting pizza places for the classrooms. Although, most of our local places were unable to donate or reduce the price. We then reached out to Little Caesars because of their pizza prices. In our many efforts to contact Little Caesars we finally got ahold of them. After telling them what our project was about they gave us a reduced price of $4 per pizza. Plus, the tax refund sheet we had. We calculated how many pizzas we need for each class and the cost. The day had finally come. We went to Little Caesars right at opening. We picked up the pizzas and brought them to NPI. The kids were so excited to get pizza. We passed out the pizzas to the kids with the help of the administrators. We repeated this the next week for NPE.

We waited until our long days to collect the shoes people brought in. Throughout the drive we continuous advertise so people would bring in shoes. We even posted on our social media pages to remind people.
First Pick Up During homeroom, we when around the high school to collect shoes. Unfortunately, classroom after classroom, nobody had shoes. Some didn't even know we had a shoe drive going on. Saddened from the few shoes we had collected form the high school, we headed over to NPI and NPE during 4th period. We went over to NPI first to collect shoes. This took longer than expected because we has so many bags filled with shoes. Then, we went to NPE to collect shoes. At both school we were astonished by the amount of shoes they had brought in. The schools has boxes overflowing with shoes. Almost every classroom had at least a pair one shoes. After collected shoes we had at least a couple hundred. Second Pick Up We did the same thing as the first time. We collected the shoes at the high school. They happened to be quite a bit more pairs of shoes this time. Then, we headed over to NPI, thinking that it was going to be lest or the same as last week. You can image our surprise when there was even more shoes. After going to NPE and NPI, we were carry bag and bag out to our cars. We now had two cars full of shoes. The Football Game The football game was at the very end of our drive on the night of October 4th. We had been getting everything ready for the football game. We go the t-shirt and I picked up a bin to collect shoes from one of our Changing Footprints contacts. Although, Sydney had a softball game in Ohio and I was cheering at the football game. We are very grateful for our parents who set everything up, gave out shirts, and collected shoes from us at the football game. They put up a table outside one of the entrances with all the shirts on it and the bin to collect shoes. We got about 50 pairs of shoes from the game. We first started by making flyers to advertise for the shoe drive. (as pictured in last post) This didn't take us very long. All we had to do was write what we wanted to say and input some pictures. We printed 100 flyers for the schools in the drive.
Then, we contacted all the schools in our district. Some got back to us faster than others whether the could participate or not. Our goal was to make this shoe drive a district wide competition. Unfortunately, only half of the schools were doing the drive. We had New Palestine Elementary, New Palestine Intermediate, and New Palestine High School. We also emailed the administrators and asked them to put an announcement out about the shoe drive in their newsletters. Our contacts emailed all the teachers so that they knew that the shoe drive was happening as well. Throughout preparation, we asked around for moving boxes that we could put outside each classroom to collect the shoes. We ended up getting more than enough boxes, and recycled the ones we didn't need. Although, we decided to use white trash bags for the high school. We also decided that we needed an incentive for people to bring shoes to the football game. We went downstairs to talk to Mr. Cooper, the Athletic Director, to see if people could get discounted tickets to the game for bring a pair of shoes. Knowing that there was a slim chance it was still worth a shot. Unfortunately, he said no, but then offered to give us 100 dragon t-shirts instead. We gladly accepted. We decided that we would do two picks throughout the two weeks. We would go on our long days so we would have more time to collect shoes from all the schools. To prepare for this we made a shoe counting list. We made a list for each school with a list of the teachers on it. Also, on the sheet we could write in how many shoes were collected at each pick up. In addition, we printed and cut out the name of each teacher to tape to the boxes or staple to the bags. We started setting up for the drive on Friday. During 4th period, we passed out as many bags as we could to teachers at the high school. Then, Sydney finished passing out the rest after school. While I was at NPI, folding and taping the boxes. Following finishing up at the high school, Sydney came to NPI to help me pass out the boxes to each classroom. Then, we both went to NPE to put together boxes and pass them out. This only took a couple hours after school. After setting up, we anxiously waited for the shoe drive to start new week. Initial Project Thoughts My project partner, Sydney Anderson, and I came up with the project idea pretty fast. My project partner is going on a mission trip in January in which they needed shoes. They picked up shoes to take with them from a non-profit called Changing Footprints. We decided to have a friendly competition at the schools. We had come up with the idea to have each class to collect shoes. As an incentive, the wining class would win a pizza party. We later came up with the idea, with the help of Mr. Burk, for the shoe drive a the high school to apart of the Class Cup competition. The Class Cup is a series of competitions throughout the school year against each grade level. We also wanted our community, outside of the schools, to be able to participate. We talked to Mr. Cooper about possible doing something at a football game for the shoe drive. He was on board, and said that we could have 100 t-shirts to give out for people that bring shoes to the game. This is important because Changing Footprint provides pick up locations for people in the local area so they have access to shoes if needed. Also, they provide shoes nationwide. For example, last year when there was a hurricane they sent shoes to the people that needed them. I hope that this project this project has community interaction and involvement. I hope that the New Palestine community can come together to donate shoes to people in need. Proposal and Pitch Day I believe our proposal went well. For summary, we partnered with Changing Footprints and are doing a competition with the school. We came up with collecting shoes at the football game for community involvement. We want us and our community to provide shoes for people in need. One of our goals is to collect one pair of shoe for every student in the district. We need to get bins for the classroom, make flyers for advertisement, and the t-shirts for the football game. Also, we needed to contact the schools, pick week(s) for the drive (September 23- October 4), and pick up the shoes during the drive. It took. a lot of preparation for getting the proposal ready. We had to come up with the introduction, objective, resources, and logistics of the entire project. We reached out to some contacts as well, to make sure this project is possible. We created a powerpoint and a bullet point summary paper for the administrators. It was good to present to administrators and peers. I think that administrator and peer feedback helped us clean up parts of the project we were unsure about. We then began preparation for the shoe drive. We started out by making flyers, collecting boxes, and contacting the other district schools. |
